Chettinad, a small area in southern Tamil Nadu, is the homeland to the Nattukottai Chettiars or Nagarathar community. During colonial days this resourceful mercantile community ventured into south East Asia and did very successful business there. With their resources and exposure to south East Asia, their cuisine developed and Chettinad cuisine is very famous today.
